Northumberland College’s Ashington Campusdevelopment has been shortlisted at the Insider North East Property Awards.

The multi-million-pound project, which is being managed by real estate consultants Hollis, is a finalist in the Refit and Refurbishment of the Year and Commercial Development of the Year categories.

Building work began in August 2019 to refurbish and upgrade the campus main building, a seven-storey 1950s-built tower block, to further position Northumberland College as one of the region’s leading education and training providers.

Major improvements will include a digital academy and a health simulation ward to provide students with state-of-the-art, industry standard facilities, as well as a dynamic community hub offering a safe learning environment and bespoke support.

Other significant benefits include future-proofing the building to reduce future maintenance requirements, improve energy efficiency and improve health and safety through extensive refurbishments such as new windows, a modern heating system, new boundary fencing and refurbished classrooms.

Steve Brown, Group Director of Facilities and Capital Projects, said: “We are delighted that our Ashington Campus redevelopment has been shortlisted at the Insider North East Property Awards.

“It is a fantastic achievement for the project team who have been involved in the design and construction and who are working hard to realise our vision of a world-class learning environment for students and staff.”

Development resumed last month following the easing of lockdown restrictions, with local companies SV Rutter, STP Construction, MJ Phoenix & Son and Aptus Shopfitting contracted by Hollis to turn the college’s vision into reality.

David Cox, Partner at Hollis, added: We’re very pleased that Ashington Campus has been shortlisted for two awards at the North East Property Awards.

The project has been logistically challenging as we kept the College operational whist completing critical works such as safeguarding improvements, replacing the heating system, electrical infrastructure and windows, along with upgrading the facilities.

It’s great to be back on site and looking forward to completion.”

The Insider Media North East Property Awards recognises and showcases the many outstanding developments, schemes and deals from the last twelve months and the skilled agents, developers, investors and other property professionals based in the region.

Winners will be announced at the gala dinner taking place at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on 17 September 2020.
